GETTING PAST THE BUMPS IN THE ROAD

(This is an article from the coaching tips book -“Reach For The Stars”. For more information contact Angela Lund of S.T.A.R.S. Leadership Training www.starsleadershiptraining.com)

All of us experience times in our lives, personally and professionally, when we are faced with a situation that causes us pain. We can choose to dwell on what is happening or find a way to get past it, learning from it, and becoming a better person because of it. After all, the most productive learning we will ever do is learning that comes directly from experience. The situation may result from a mistake that was made or may be something that was not in your control. If it is a mistake, keep in mind that you are not perfect. You WILL make mistakes from time to time. It is getting past those mistakes and learning from them that will turn you into a better person. If it is something that is out of your control than try to learn from the grief that the experience caused. If you try to turn every negative situation into a positive one, you have done your best to remedy it. This doesn’t mean you are not allowed to be angry, sorry, or hurt. Feel those emotions first. Then, GET OVER IT! Analyze what happened. Focus on your feelings. Forgive yourself and know that time heals all wounds.

During times like these a good friend, a supportive family member, or an esteemed colleague may supply you with the support you need to overcome the negative feelings. You need to see that you are still a good person. Make sure that your self esteem does not suffer. If you look at any great person in this world you would be fascinated at the stories that person could tell about overcoming obstacles. Know that you are not alone, that everyone has been there at one point or another, and that time will heel the situation. Have faith, believe in yourself, and persevere!

You may want to turn to motivational books during these times and take the wisdom of others to help grow from the situation. Here are a few motivational quotes that I have found that fit this section well.

On Faith: Faith gives us the courage to face the present with confidence and the future with expectancy. (Unknown)

On Belief: What the mind of a (wo)man can conceive and believe, the mind of a (wo)man can achieve. (Napoleon Hill)

On Perseverance: History has demonstrated that the most notable winners usually encountered heartbreaking obstacles before they triumphed. They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats. (B.C. Forbes)

A bend in the road is not the end of the road unless you fail to make the turn. (Unknown)

Don’t Quit (Clinton Howell)
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile but instead you cry.
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you may, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When she might have won had she stuck it out.
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another go.

Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver lining on the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far.
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit,
It’s when things seem worst…
THAT YOU MUST NOT QUIT
